What the 2027 premium increase means in your municipality
The average premium for an adult rises 5.0 % at the median between 2026 and 2027, which comes to 275 francs more per year per person. Of the 2’102 municipalities for which the Federal Office of Public Health publishes an average premium, not one escapes the increase: the range runs from 2.2 % to 6.4 % depending on the premium region.
A general increase of varying size
In the median municipality, the average adult premium goes from 439.7 francs a month in 2026 to 464.7 francs in 2027. The median increase is 5.0 %, a figure that matches the 5.0 % announced on 29 September 2026 by the Federal Office of Public Health for the national average premium.
The spread, by contrast, is substantial. The hardest-hit premium regions exceed 6.2 %, the least affected stay below 3 %. The same percentage increase does not weigh the same either: 6.4 % on a premium of 455.7 francs is not the same amount as on a premium of 417.4 francs.
The premium depends on the region, not the municipality
The Federal Office of Public Health assigns each municipality to a premium region, numbered 0 to 3 depending on the canton. All municipalities in the same region carry exactly the same premium and therefore see exactly the same increase. The table below shows those regions rather than individual municipalities, so as not to repeat one line dozens of times.
| Premium region | Reference municipality | Municipalities | Increase | 2026 to 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SH region 1 | Schaffhausen | 2 | +6.4 % | 455.7 to 485.0 CHF |
| ZH region 3 | Wetzikon (ZH) | 122 | +6.2 % | 421.1 to 447.2 CHF |
| JU region 0 | Delémont | 51 | +5.9 % | 520.4 to 551.0 CHF |
| SO region 0 | Olten | 104 | +5.7 % | 466.7 to 493.5 CHF |
| AG region 0 | Baden | 196 | +5.7 % | 439.7 to 464.7 CHF |
| NE region 0 | Neuchâtel | 24 | +5.6 % | 529.0 to 558.8 CHF |
| GL region 0 | Glarus Nord | 3 | +2.2 % | 417.4 to 426.5 CHF |
| VD region 2 | Yverdon-les-Bains | 177 | +3.0 % | 506.9 to 522.3 CHF |
| VD region 1 | Lausanne | 115 | +3.1 % | 537.0 to 553.8 CHF |
| GR region 3 | Ilanz/Glion | 40 | +3.2 % | 383.3 to 395.5 CHF |
The cantons where it bites hardest
At the cantonal median, the rise in the average adult premium is steepest in ZH (6.2 %), JU (5.9 %), AG (5.7 %), SO (5.7 %). It is lowest in GL (2.2 %), VD (3.0 %), TI (3.6 %).
These figures cover the average adult premium. The cantonal numbers quoted in the press at the end of September covered the average premium across all age classes instead, children and young adults included. The two measures are not interchangeable and do not produce the same percentages.
The window to switch runs to the end of November
Insurers had to notify their policyholders of the 2027 premiums by the end of October. Policyholders can then terminate their basic insurance or change model until the end of November, which is under four weeks at the time this article is published.
The gap between regions remains far wider than the increase itself. In 2027 the average adult premium runs from 324.9 francs a month in Zug (ZG) to 610.6 francs in Perly-Certoux (GE), a difference of 3’428 francs over the year. Where you live therefore counts for more than the annual increase.

Termination procedures are handled by your insurer.
