Manno reaches 4.57 jobs per resident

The Federal Statistical Office’s Regional portraits count 6’279 jobs on the territory of Manno, in Ticino, for 2018. The municipality has 1’373 residents according to the latest population figures, at 31 December 2024. The ratio between these two values reaches 4.57 jobs per resident, the highest in the country in this dataset.

A job, in this statistic, is a post located in the municipality itself. The place of residence of the person holding it is not taken into account. A municipality can therefore show a high ratio without its own residents working there.

Manno’s ratio is more than thirteen times the national median of 0.34. In absolute terms, the gap comes to 4’906 more jobs than residents. Aclens (VD), second in this ranking, shows 1’690 jobs for 585 residents, a gap of 1’105.

Eight municipalities reach or exceed two jobs per resident

Behind Manno, Aclens (VD) reaches 2.89 jobs per resident. Deisswil bei Münchenbuchsee (BE) follows with 212 jobs for 85 residents, or 2.49. Montagny-près-Yverdon (VD), Grancia (TI), Mex (VD) and Mezzovico-Vira (TI) lie between 2.19 and 2.10. Satigny (GE) closes the series at 2.00.

These eight municipalities belong to four cantons: Ticino, Vaud, Bern and Geneva. Four of them have fewer than 800 residents: Aclens (585), Deisswil bei Münchenbuchsee (85), Montagny-près-Yverdon (780) and Grancia (468). Job volumes there range from 212 to 9’424 posts.

Kloten and Satigny, the largest volumes outside the big cities

Kloten (ZH) totals 37’403 jobs for 21’737 residents, or 1.72 jobs per resident. That is the largest volume among the municipalities of fewer than 25’000 residents in this ranking. The gap comes to 15’666 more jobs than residents.

The 67 municipalities concerned also include large cities, whose volumes are far higher: Zurich records 491’193 jobs for a ratio of 1.13, Bern 188’252 for 1.36 and Basel 185’432 for 1.04.

Satigny (GE) records 9’424 jobs for 4’713 residents, or 2.00 after rounding (1.9996). Aarau (AG) reaches 34’888 jobs for 22’710 residents, or 1.54. Chiasso (TI) shows 10’995 jobs for 7’564 residents, or 1.45.

The 1’000-resident filter sets aside very small calculation bases, where a few dozen posts are enough to produce a high ratio. Among municipalities of at least 1’000 residents, the highest ratios are as follows:

The big cities remain below

Bern shows 1.36 jobs per resident, with 188’252 jobs for 137’995 residents. Zurich reaches 1.13, with 491’193 jobs for 436’551 residents. Basel stands at 1.04, with 185’432 jobs for 177’571 residents. None of the six largest cities comes close to Manno’s ratio.

Geneva and Lausanne fall below one job per resident. Geneva has 186’620 jobs for 209’061 residents, or 0.89. Lausanne records 124’073 jobs for 144’873 residents, or 0.86. Winterthur drops to 0.61, with 73’339 jobs for 120’376 residents.

The national median ratio stands at 0.34

The median, the middle value, comes to 0.34 jobs per resident. Half of the 2’022 municipalities in the survey lie below it. The 67 municipalities that have more jobs than residents account for 3.3 % of this set.

The survey covers the 2’022 municipalities for which both jobs and population are available. The 67 municipalities in question do not form a homogeneous group: their population ranges from 85 residents in Deisswil bei Münchenbuchsee to 436’551 in Zurich.

At the other end, fewer than one job for ten residents

Chancy (GE) records 134 jobs for 1’664 residents, or 0.08. Châtillon (FR) shows 44 jobs for 528 residents, at the same level. Three Vaud municipalities stand at 0.09: Commugny, with 281 jobs for 2’973 residents, Tannay, with 152 jobs for 1’746 residents, and Sullens, with 111 jobs for 1’226 residents.

The job and establishment figures come from the Regional portraits of the Federal Statistical Office, 2018 reference year, the most recent available in this dataset. The population used in the denominator is the permanent resident population at 31 December 2024: the ratio published here therefore sets two different reference years against each other, jobs from 2018 and a population from the end of 2024, and does not describe a situation observed in the same year. A job is a post located in the municipality itself, whatever the place of residence of the person holding it. The 2’022 municipalities covered are those for which both values are available.

In total, the survey counts 5’187’913 jobs and 650’456 establishments, or about 8 jobs per establishment and an average of 2’566 jobs per municipality.
